Monkeypox. Here's what we know: - it's a viral infection with a less than 1% mortality rate. - it's in the same viral family as smallpox and cowpox - it has been around and known about since 1958 Here's what we don't know: How could it be popping up in so many countries simultaneously, if it's not a novel virus? An outbreak through Western Europe within this timeframe would be questionable. But we are expected to believe that it has either reached North America already, or coincidentally begun spreading there in parallel with Europe. This raises the question of whether the virus could have been released in each place deliberately. At this point it doesn't seem likely, but let's not rule out the possibility.
