It's Just Easier

Being easygoing is considered to be a quality. And I think it is one. But what do the easygoing do when the going gets not-so-easy?

It depends on integrity. There's no denying that the easiest thing to do at the moment is keep your head down, put face coverings on, don't be seen to do the wrong thing, keep off the radar. But the easy thing is very rarely the right thing to do.

Public compliance is the term for a change in behaviour (including public expression of opinion) that is not accompanied by a change in private opinion.

For example, public compliance can be seen in Iranian culture, where women’s wearing of concealing clothing is enforced and therefore publicly complied to, but this social norm is not proportionately privately accepted (Molavi, 2002). People may publicly conform to avoid ridicule, rejection, imprisonment or, as with Iran, worse. This means that the small amount of women with the courage to speak up are being treated awfully, whereas if they had the full strength and support of the amount of people who actually disagree with the rule, they would have a lot more success in making change.

Conforming in public, despite your own views, contributes to the ridicule and discrediting of those who do not conform. If you would rather have an easy life than support those who are representing views you agree with, that's cowardice.

On the other hand, if you have accepted the official narrative without question, I can only think of 3 potential reasons why:

  1. You are afraid of what you would discover if you question it. It's more comfortable to believe what you're told than to know you're being lied to.
  2. You subconsciously reject doubt, because doubt and uncertainty make you anxious. It's more comfortable to believe what you're told than to have no idea what to believe.
  3. You can't be bothered and don't think it makes a difference to you. It's more comfortable to believe what you're told than worry about the suffering you aren't seeing in person.
The only reason not to question the narrative is for the sake of your own personal comfort. If you are 100%, entirely, completely confident that the government is doing the right thing - what do you have to lose by investigating and listening? You will only find things that confirm your beliefs, right?
