All Hail the Tories

 In the past year, every social narrative I've ever encountered from the hard left has done a complete 180. 

The first being the idea that big multi-national corporations are evil. This is one I actually agree with, although I was never exactly getting out the guillotine. They promote consumerism and waste, they kill smaller businesses, they don't pay employees properly and just treat people as a number. Not to name any names but lets make one up, call it Schmamazon, I know people who have claimed it needs "dismantling" and that it's entirely corrupt. So why are the same people not seeing the problem with a lockdown that has doubled their profits? 

Another concept that's been scrapped is fast fashion and sweatshops being terrible. Again, I agree, and I prefer to buy quality products that will last me a long time even if it costs a little more. And yet, an independent investigator said Boohoo had "capitalised on the commercial opportunities offered by lockdown" but took no responsibility for the consequences for those making the clothes. They have acquired multiple online brands and profits surged to £68.1m during lockdown. 

The final and most bizarre turnaround that I have seen is the attitude towards Boris Johnson and the Tory party. When it was all about Brexit, there was strong hatred towards the Tory party. If I asked someone in 2019 if they thought the Tory party cared about them they'd laugh. Now, however, everyone is convinced that the Government cares about saving lives, doing the right thing, and helping people. All hail the benevolent Tories. Do what they want and we'll get our rights back, they promised so we have to believe them. WHERE did that come from? There has always been a level of anti-establishment rebellion in young people, fighting for freedom and against conformity, not doing exactly what the Government wants you to. The fact that that is now completely missing is disturbing to me. 

People have said to me, "We don't like lockdown, but it's what we have to do. If everyone co-operates it will be over quicker.". Which sounds to me a lot like "Just do what he says and he won't hurt us.". And I understand. You're scared. You're tired. You want this to end just as much as I do. But please just think, when has anyone with power ever actually given it back without a fight? When has "just giving the guy what he wants" ever ended well? Czechoslovakia, anyone? 

Disclaimer: if you're mugged it is always safer to just hand over what they want in the moment. That's an exception. But then you go to the police, you don't thank the mugger for saving your life and offer them your clothes too.

On Saturday, some friends and I went to the shop. A year ago, you'd have said "so?". This year, it's gone semi-viral on twitter - Simon Dolan, Gillian McKeith, and David Kurten have all weighed in with their support.  If you've been exercising your exemption, you know that going to the shop can be an ordeal. Workers who are misinformed of the law asking to see your exemption card, asking you to "wait outside" if you don't have an exemption card, some even ask what makes you exempt! It's all highly invasive and unnecessary (not to mention illegal). This is why we went as a group - for strength in numbers, to do something normal and not be harassed for it. Did we organise it? Yes. Did it make a statement? Sure. But the point to emphasise is that what we did was normal. A Stand In The Park

  Both a literal and metaphorical stand, groups from all over England have been convening every Sunday in parks to share thoughts and ideas in defiance of the inhumane restrictions imposed by the Johnson regime.  Our stand, in Chelmsford, began with just four attendees, including myself. 5 weeks on, our numbers are 5 times as many and growing strong. Every week with the mix of first-timers, regulars, and people who come when they can, I get to meet and talk with a variety of amazing people who never fail to brighten my day. Being in a natural space with people who are not afraid of an uncovered smile, who don't treat one another as though we are "unclean" - it's a breath of fresh air in more ways than one.  It is a fundamental part of human life to gather with others. We gather to celebrate, to mourn, to worship, to work, and to simply share our experiences. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

 When someone criticises my articles, the first thing I ask them is "have you read it?". More often than not, they say no. They might say "I don't need to!" or "I know what it will say", but if you don't know for sure what you're taking issue against, that's a hell of a gamble with which to begin your argument.  This is how it's come about that people have decided I am "anti-vaxx", or a "crazy conspiracy theorist".
